How do I get a library card?
Anyone age 5 and over can get a library card using a photo ID and proof of address. Parents or legal guardians are asked to provide their ID to get a card for their child. Please note that parents/guardians are responsible for materials borrowed on their children’s cards, as well as any fines or fees accrued.
Does the library have wireless internet?
Yes, WiFi is accessible throughout the library. The network is called SkanLib, and there is no password.
Can I print from my laptop or phone?
You can! The library subscribes to a service called PrinterOn, which makes it easy to print remotely from your laptop or mobile device. Just download the PrinterOn app to your device or click the logo on our home page from your laptop to get started. Need help? A staff person will be happy to walk you through it.
Are there computers available for public use?
Yes, there are five computers available for word processing (including Microsoft 2016 Word, Excel and Publisher) and the internet. If there are people waiting to use the computer, your time is limited to 30 minutes; however, if no one is waiting to use the computer, there is no time limit. We also have 10 laptops we use for programs, but they’re available for use inside the building if needed.
There’s a computer just for searching the library catalog in the children’s room.
We also have a scanner available to the public, and you can print from our computers or over WiFi in black & white (10₡) or color (25₡).
How long can I keep materials?
- Rapid Reads: 1 week, no renewals
- All Other Books: 3 weeks, 2 renewals

- BOCD: 3 weeks, 2 renewals
- Early Literacy Kits: 3 weeks, 2 renewals
MUSIC CDS & MAGAZINES
- Adult & Childrens: 3 weeks, 2 renewals
***Items with holds from other patrons may not be renewed***
How much are overdue fines?
There are no fines for overdue children’s, middle reader or young adult materials, including Early Literacy Kits, Discovery Backpacks and DVDs shelved in the Family section. Please note that borrowers of these items are still responsible for lost or damaged materials.
All other materials accrue fines as follows:
Rapid Reads: $0.35 per day
Books, Magazines, BOCD and Music CDs: $0.15 per day
DVDs: $0.50 per day

How do I renew an item?
Click the grey MY ACCOUNT tab on the left of the home page. You will be prompted for your library card barcode (no spaces) and PIN number. Your barcode is on the front of your library card (it will look something like this: 2 9850 XXXXX XXXX). Your 4-digit PIN number was set when you registered for your library card. If you don’t remember your PIN, please call or visit the library and we can reset it for you.
Click on “Items Out” to see a list all of the items on your record. Simply click the check box next to the item(s) you want to renew and then click “Renew Selected Items.” If an item is on hold for another patron, you will not be able to renew it.
If you prefer, you can always call, email or visit the library, and we’ll be happy to renew your items for you!
How do I place a hold on an item or order an item from another library?
From the record in the online catalog, click on “Place Hold.” If you’re not already logged in to your account, you’ll be asked to do so using your library card barcode and PIN number. Select the library at which you’d like to pick up the item and click “Submit request.” If you’d like an item not owned by any library in Onondaga County, ask a staff person about placing an Interlibrary Loan Request.
How will I know when my hold is ready for me to pick up at the library?
You can be notified by an automated phone, email or text message. You probably selected a preference when you signed up for your card, but we can can change it for you at any time.
How do I change my PIN number?
Just call or visit the library. We can’t see what your current PIN number is, but we can change it. If you call, please make sure you have your library barcode number handy.
Can I return Skaneateles items to any library in Onondaga County?
You may return our items to any Onondaga County library, and you may also return any of the other Onondaga County libraries’ materials to Skaneateles. However, Fast Flicks and Rapid Reads should be returned to the owning library.
