Project Bookends is the interim name for a proposal to build a new facility to serve as a community gathering space for events, music, arts and lectures for people of all ages on the site of the former Stella Maris Retreat. This facility would be home to the Skaneateles Library and the John D. Barrow Art Gallery, as well as a new Learning Center to provide programming opportunities that are beyond the scope of the Library and Gallery.
The Skaneateles Library, the Barrow Gallery and the Learning Center – the working name for a new cultural and educational programming organization still in its development phase – would serve as independent organizations integrated within one facility, which would feature shared, flexible programming spaces that will also be available for community use.
The Skaneateles Library provides library services to local residents and visitors. The Barrow Art Gallery conserves and displays the works of John D. Barrow. The Learning Center would bring Skaneateles residents a wide variety of compelling educational, cultural and entertainment experiences for all ages.
Located in the village of Skaneateles and overlooking Lake Skaneateles, the facility would be easily accessible to Skaneateles residents and provide an inviting destination for arts, culture and learning in Central New York.
